Mammography & Minorities Course Description
Mammography has been proven to reduce breast cancer mortality and is the gold standard for screening purposes. The National Cancer Institute has estimated that 1 in 8 American women will be affected by breast cancer in their lifetime. Women who participate in regular breast screening programs are more likely to have an early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer than those who are not regularly screened. The National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, and breast cancer advocacy groups recognize that breast cancer screening is underutilized by the population in general, but is particularly underutilized by traditionally undeserved minority populations.

This course explores issues and concerns associated with mammography and minority populations. Highlights of this course include facts about minorities and access to healthcare, breast cancer facts and figures, models of prediction for breast cancer risk, pathology, issues related to adherence to mammography screening guidelines, imaging modalities, mammography examinations. A chapter about the Joint Commission's recent mandates concerning effective communication, cultural competence, and patient-and-family centered care is also included in this course. Two separate chapters focus on quality improvement in imaging services and radiation protection in mammography.

This course contains a reading reference and a multiple-choice posttest. This course applies to mammographers, radiologic technologists, and limited radiographers.
