Thoracic and esophageal injuries
are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality
in trauma patients and the use of multimodality
imaging with conventional radiography, multidetector
computed tomography (CT) is increasing being used
to help diagnose injuries in trauma patients.
Respiratory maneuvers are very important in obtaining
diagnostic quality CT images. Inadequate respiratory
maneuvers can influence differences in lung attenuation
and lead to missrepresentation. The radiographer
is usually the person responsible for giving respiratory
instructions prior to and during imaging examinations.
This course provides important information about
CT protocols and procedures when imaging blunt
thoracic trauma and esophageal emergencies and
the role that adequate respiratory maneuvers play
in the production of high quality images. A section
is devoted to radiation protection and CT examinations.
The course contains 4 parts.
Part 1 Multidetector CT Evaluation of Blunt
Thoracic Trauma. Part 2 Quality Initiatives:
Respiratory Instructions for CT Examinations
of the Lungs: A Hands-on Guide. Part 3 CT Features
of Esophageal Emergencies. Part 4 Radiation
Protection and CT. Parts 1-3 are web-based documents.
You will be sent directions with a link to access
the reading references. Part 4 will be sent
via email. This course posttest has 40 multiple-choice
questions. This course applies to all radiographers,
radiologic technologists (RTs) and limited radiographers.
