In
the past, patients with a breast mass had only
one choice, a 1-step surgical intervention procedure.
However, today, image-guided biopsy provides a
2-step method that allows time for consultation
and decision-making choices after the biopsy but
before the next step. Studies have shown that
the emotional burden of breast cancer is easier
to bear if biopsy and treatment are performed
at separate times.
This course provides a review of breast anatomy
and physiology, current breast cancer statistics,
and the most common types of breast cancer. Excerpts
from the American College of Radiology Guidelines
for the performance of both breast biopsy and
pre-operative needle localization using mammography/stereotactic
breast biopsy, ultrasound and magnetic resonance
imaging guided breast biopsy. Details are provided
regarding fine needle and core biopsy procedures
as well as stereotactic procedures. Indications
and contraindications are included as appropriate
to each imaging modality discussed. A brief history
of mammography and breast biopsy is provided.
A review of recommended universal precautions
and preparation for participation in surgical
interventional procedures is also provided.
This course contains a reference with 191 pages
and a posttest with 75 multiple-choice questions.
This course applies to mammographers, radiologic
technologists (RTs) and limited radiographers. |
