Fluoroscopy &
Radiation Management -12
12 Category A CE Credits
Since 1994, the FDA has been issuing public health
advisories about the potential for excessive radiation
exposure during interventional fluoroscopy. The
current state of fluoroscopy examinations has
vastly changed from its original use in barium
sulfate contrast studies. Today, fluoroscopy procedures
include an increasing variety of image examinations
that are both diagnostic and therapeutic. Because
these procedures are often technically difficult,
they can involve total radiation exposure times
exceeding an hour or more. The number of prolonged
fluoroscopic procedures performed in the United
States has increased dramatically over the past
10 years. The increased rates of these procedures
are partially driven by the preference of managed
care to use methods that are less invasive and
less costly than surgery. This course provides
a basic introduction for individuals who have
not had formal training in fluoroscopy and radiation
management and a review for those who have. The
course covers the following major topics: Introduction
to Fluoroscopy, Radiation Review, Fluoroscopy
Systems, Procedures, and Preparation, Measuring
Fluoroscopy Dose, Radiation Management, Pediatric
Fluoroscopy, Structural Design and Personnel Protective
Apparel, for Radiation Protection, Contrast Media,
Quality Improvement, Quality Control Equipment
Performance, and Fluoroscopy Training and Qualification.
The course contains a reference with 239 pages
with a posttest of 120 multiple-choice questions.
This course applies to all radiographers, radiologic
technologists (RTs) and limited radiographers.
