Digital imaging began with several single steps
taken by many. Like most new technologies, failures
and roadblocks often accompanied each step forward
toward computer applications in radiology. Digital
mammography has been used as a tool for breast
cancer detection and diagnosis since the early
1990s and it has the potential to overcome the
known limitations of screen film mammography.
The greatest advantage of digital mammography
is that the steps of recording, displaying, and
archiving an image are decoupled, providing the
radiologist and mammographer the opportunity to
optimize each task independently.
The purpose of this course
is to provide an introduction to the basics of
digital mammography. Technical aspects of recording,
displaying and archiving a digital image are explained.
Terminology related to digital mammography is
presented and explained within the context of
producing high quality breast images. Other topics
presented include patient communication, breast
positioning, and radiation protection in mammography
and quality improvement in breast imaging.
The course contains a reading reference titled
Digital Mammography: The Basics and a posttest
with 90 multiple-choice questions. The course
applies to mammographers and radiographers both
RT's and limited radiographers. |
